If the Detroit Pistons waive Duncan Robinson, it's a move that could gift the exact 3-point shooting specialist that the Miami Heat needs to unlock the first-year build around Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Admittedly, while there have been some whispers about this possibility, there's no guarantee that this is going to happen. But as the Pistons continue to rework their roster, it's still not completely off the table.
Detroit just re-signed Kevin Huerter, and there's a chance that they sign and trade Jalen Duren as another possible big move (perhaps for another big and wing). They also acquired Isaiah Joe from the Oklahoma City Thunder last week.
Duncan Robinson could be the one key piece that sparks the Giannis build
There's definitely a sense that Robinson could find himself on the outside looking in, depending on how the rest of free agency goes for the Pistons. Why could Detroit waive him? Because only $2 million of his salary for the 2026-27 season is guaranteed. It may not be a preference, but it's certainly a realistic option.
If they were to do it, the Heat would be one of the huge winners as the noise surrounding a possible Robinson reunion in Miami would hit a fever pitch.
In theory, and on paper, Robinson would be a near-perfect fit next to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Heat fans already know how well of a fit Robinson was with Bam during his time in Miami. The same could be said of Giannis.
The level of gravity that players like Giannis and Bam create, Robinson would feast at the 3-point line. Coming off the second-best 3-point shooting season of his career, there are plenty of reasons why the Heat's front office could be salivating at the idea of bringing back Robinson as a key part of the first-year Giannis build.
The Heat need some luck heading into free agency
Heading into the start of free agency, the Heat needs that one key piece that could get everything going for this supporting cast. They have some intriguing pieces like Davion Mitchell, Bobby Portis, and Pelle Larsson. That said, there's no question that adding a dangerous perimeter threat like Robinson would not only add to their depth, but also go a long way in answering some of their 3-point shooting questions.
Full disclosure, because of their financial situation, the Heat is going to need some luck when it comes to building around Giannis and Bam, especially in this first year. Having the opportunity to acquire a player like Robinson would be exactly that for Miami.
But, again, there are other things that would have to happen before this even becomes a possibility for the Heat. If it were to happen, there's no question it would be an absolute gift for the Heat's first-year build around Giannis.
