Now that John Konchar has officially agreed to a deal with the New York Knicks, and not the Miami Heat, it is beginning to feel as if all roads will eventually lead back to Gabe Vincent.
Especially if the Heat are interested in signing another veteran guard, or perhaps even just bringing in another body to compete in the backcourt in training camp, Vincent seems like the best bet for the Heat at this point.
With the way the current free-agent landscape stands, it's difficult to envision the Heat taking a flyer on any other player. It'd just make too much sense. If the Heat are genuinely looking to add another veteran guard before the start of training camp, it's almost certainly going to be Vincent.
And there may be multiple reasons why.
Why Gabe Vincent may be inevitable for the Heat
I'm not sure if Vincent is the clean fit that some inside the organization believe he would be, but that doesn't mean there aren't other reasons why such a move may work.
For one, there's familiarity between Vincent and the Heat that has already been established. Vincent spent the first four years of his career in the NBA with the Heat. Before breaking out and signing a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, Vincent developed in the shadows with the Heat.
Despite the fact that Vincent may not be the playmaker the Heat really needs, let's not act like he wouldn't immediately emerge as a dependable contributor. Because he would. He may not be the "sexy" signing that many Heat fans want to see before the start of training camp, but he has proven to be a consistent backup throughout the course of his career.
While he may have struggled in Los Angeles (and then Atlanta), Vincent averaged nine points and three assists as a spot starter during his final season in Miami. He also emerged as a key component of the 2023 Heat team that made a surprise run to the NBA Finals.
There are questions about whether Vincent can be that player again, but there's an argument to be made that if he's ever going to get there, it's going to be in Miami.
Plus, there also appears to be a strong relationship between Vincent and Bam Adebayo (and perhaps even other players on the roster). Even though I can't imagine Bam is going to be slamming the table for the Heat to ink Vincent, you'd have to imagine that their established relationship does hold some weight.
When you add all of that together, it does begin to feel as if Vincent may be destined for Miami. If he's willing to fight for a roster spot, even if it is on an unguaranteed contract at first, it wouldn't be all that surprising for the Heat to consider such a move.
And, honestly, it may not be that bad of an idea at this point.
